Samsung are back on the scene again with another midrange smartphone that is wowing consumers with its excellent specs and affordable price point - the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017). Although it's not quite as meaty as the flagship Samsung Galaxy S7, it proves to be a brilliant choice for people that are looking for a powerful phone that isn't so heavy on the hip pocket.
The Samsung Galaxy A5 gives you all the good bits of the more expensive Galaxy series, in just a cut down version. And at $649 from Samsung Australia at the time of print (and can be found for less at other retailers) it is hard to beat.

Released in January of 2017, the A5 2017 is available in Australia in 2 colours, black sky and gold sand and looks and feels like a premium phone. With a 5.2 inch Full HD, Super AMOLED screen display, a beautiful metal casing and real Corning Gorilla Glass 4, it's got the premium touches that you'd expect from a pricier model.
The phone runs the Android operating system, in Marshmallow 6.0.1 flavour, and features 32GB of memory (23GB usable) with 3GB of RAM. You can also expand the internal memory as the A5 comes with a MicroSD slot which can hold Micro SD cards with up to 256GB of memory. This isn't included, though, but you can pick up MicroSD cards in the memory cards section of our online store.
The Samsung Galaxy A5 2017's CPU is a fast one, with the Samsung Exynos 7880, an octo-core processor. This means it can easily run multiple apps at once, without feeling like things are lagging. This is great if you are like many people who likes to multi-task, switching between emailing, games, and browsing social media.
Another stand out feature of the A5 is its excellent battery life. We've all had smartphones that only last half a day before needing a charge, and it is frustrating as anything. This phone fits neatly in your hand, with dimensions of 146.1 high, by 71.4 wide, by 7.9 mm deep and a weight of 157g, or about as much as a small apple. The rounded edges make it nice to hold, and it features a raised tactile home button in the bottom centre, with a windowing and back button (not raised) to either side.
The camera on the A5 has been improved from the previous model, and is now a 16MP job with f/1.9 aperture and autofocus. As for selfies, you've got the same camera for that too, so you can look impressive from all angles. The video functionality weighs in at 1080p at 30 frames per second. This is good news if you're a fan of taking videos, Snapchatting, or video calling.
If you're one of those people who always finds themselves pushed in the pool or spilling water on their devices, you'll be happy to hear that the A5 2017 is waterproof with an IP68 rating, which means that it's safe up to 30 minutes according to the specifications.
