Review
This phone has Samsung's signature design with a glass and metal finish, the A5 looks great. Its metal sides fuse the front glass display with a curved glass back. You are able to hold the phone comfortably in one hand, as your watch the device's 5.2-inch (1,920 x 1,080 pixel) Super AMOLED display.
Additionly the Galaxy A is certified IP68 for water and dust resistance up to 1.5m for 30 minutes. This will give you peace of mind when you're taking selfies at the pool or relaxing at the beach. Endowed with a 1.9GHz Octa Core, Samsungs's Exynos 7880 processor with 3GB RAM and uses Android Marshmellow, 6.0.1.
The device itself measures 146.1 x 71.4 x 7.9 mm (HxWxD) and weighs in at only 159 grams. It uses a Nano-SIM card.
The handset's Always on Display means you'll have access to the time, calendar, notifications and more, at a glance, without needing to unlock your phone.
The 3000 mAh battery will help keep you going through the day, should you happen to run out of power, this smartphone has a fast charge capability via its USB Type-C charging port, which means you'll be back enjoying your device in next to no time. Talk Time is quoted as being up to 16 hours and internet usage time as 16 hours as well.
This device is compatible with Samsung Pay so you are able to add your favourite loyalty cards to scan at the register. You can add a compatible bank-issued credit card which will let you make payments by tapping your phone on the top of the payment terminal (or on the side of for older machines).
With two high resolution 16MP front and rear cameras, you can take stunning selfies and capture those special moments with your friends and family.
With the unit's preset camera filters you can spruce up your photos with the 'food mode' setting (a setting for your camera that's setup to let you take food pics) will make sure all your friends have food envy.
The phone will adjust its camera settings to help capture those special moments even in the dark. The 16MP front camera and bright display that doubles as a flash will make sure you capture sharper results, even when you're in low-light conditions.
You have 32 GB internal storage on the phone and if this isn't enough, the device can support microSD cards, which are sold separately, up to a 256 GB capacity.

Samsung are back on the scene again with another midrange smartphone that is wowing consumers with its excellent specs and affordable price point - the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017). Although it's not quite as meaty as the flagship Samsung Galaxy S7, it proves to be a brilliant choice for people that are looking for a powerful phone that isn't so heavy on the hip pocket.
The Samsung Galaxy A5 gives you all the good bits of the more expensive Galaxy series, in just a cut down version. And at $649 from Samsung Australia at the time of print (and can be found for less at other retailers) it is hard to beat.

Released in January of 2017, the A5 2017 is available in Australia in 2 colours, black sky and gold sand and looks and feels like a premium phone. With a 5.2 inch Full HD, Super AMOLED screen display, a beautiful metal casing and real Corning Gorilla Glass 4, it's got the premium touches that you'd expect from a pricier model.
The phone runs the Android operating system, in Marshmallow 6.0.1 flavour, and features 32GB of memory (23GB usable) with 3GB of RAM. You can also expand the internal memory as the A5 comes with a MicroSD slot which can hold Micro SD cards with up to 256GB of memory. This isn't included, though, but you can pick up MicroSD cards in the memory cards section of our online store.
The Samsung Galaxy A5 2017's CPU is a fast one, with the Samsung Exynos 7880, an octo-core processor. This means it can easily run multiple apps at once, without feeling like things are lagging. This is great if you are like many people who likes to multi-task, switching between emailing, games, and browsing social media.
Another stand out feature of the A5 is its excellent battery life. We've all had smartphones that only last half a day before needing a charge, and it is frustrating as anything. The battery is a 3000mAh affair, which outstrips most phones in all categories. This means it's a great choice for those that are out all day and don't work in close vicinity to a power point with a mains charger! For everyone else, there are always Samsung Galaxy A5 car chargers, car cradles, power banks.
For the longest lasting power banks that get you the most charges, choose one that has the highest mAh. For example, with a 3000mAh phone, if you purchase a 15000mAh power bank, you'll be able to get 5 full charges of your smartphone if your power bank is fully charged. That is more than enough phone charge for a whole long weekend away camping, even if you're using your phone to play music with your Bluetooth speaker!
This phone fits neatly in your hand, with dimensions of 146.1 high, by 71.4 wide, by 7.9 mm deep and a weight of 157g, or about as much as a small apple. The rounded edges make it nice to hold, and it features a raised tactile home button in the bottom centre, with a windowing and back button (not raised) to either side.
The camera on the A5 has been improved from the previous model, and is now a 16MP job with f/1.9 aperture and autofocus. As for selfies, you've got the same camera for that too, so you can look impressive from all angles. The video functionality weighs in at 1080p at 30 frames per second. This is good news if you're a fan of taking videos, Snapchatting, or video calling.
If you're one of those people who always finds themselves pushed in the pool or spilling water on their devices, you'll be happy to hear that the A5 2017 is waterproof with an IP68 rating, which means that it's safe up to 30 minutes according to the specifications.
